Associate Professor in Language and Linguistics, Aalborg University
At the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of Culture and Communication, a full-time position as Associate Professor in language and linguistics is open for appointment from October 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible hereafter.
Job description
The position will consist of research within language and linguistics, and teaching of linguistic disciplines, particularly in the English and the Danish degree programmes.
The position will be affiliated with the Communication, Language and Discourse research group (CLD), where the successful candidate is expected to contribute to continued innovation and development of the research environment, with a particular focus on linguistic phenomena in or across English and Danish, and on how linguistic research can contribute to interdisciplinary or problem-oriented research and innovation and have impact in the wider world. In terms of teaching duties, the successful candidate is expected to teach topics related to the field of linguistics within the English Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes and the Danish Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. Courses in other of the department’s degree programmes may also be required, such as Language and International Studies, English.
Teaching obligations will also include supervision of semester projects. For this purpose, documented experience with problem-based learning (PBL, on which AAU pedagogy is based) will be an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
Formal qualifications and requirements
Applicants are required to document teaching skills equivalent to those achieved after a successful period of employment as a Postdoc, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Research qualifications must be documented by means of a significant body of independent peer-reviewed international publications. The applicant is expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in Danish as well as in English.
Assessment of candidates
In the assessment process, the following components will be of prominent importance:
strong research qualifications within linguistic disciplines, such as grammar, phonology, semantics and foreign language acquisition, focusing on English and Danish broad and well-documented teaching experience across a range of fields within language/linguistics and related disciplines, where relevant native or near-native language proficiency in Danish and English prior experience with external funding (please describe this in the application) detailed research plan, including an ambitious and realistic plan for external funding (please unfold this in the research plan).
In terms of personal qualities, applicants are expected to possess good cooperative skills, and to be able to establish and maintain good relations with researchers from different cultural and political backgrounds.
Practical circumstances
Applicants must be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the department and study programmes.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.
It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.
